Liberals in general tend to hate the military because the prescence of our men & women in uniform reminds them that, despite their naive utopian ideals, evil people exist in the world and without our soldiers, sailors, Marines, & airmen, we would be at the mercy of people who wish to destroy our very civilization.
General Ralph Peters (US Army) has many times correctly pointed out that the fine words of noble humanitarian theorists-The Declaration of Independence, The Emancipation Proclamation, The Civil Rights Acts-would remain only words if there were no force to back them up. If Washington's troops did not fight and die, we would have remained a British possession; without the Union Army, Lincoln could not have ended Black Slavery on these shores; and it was Eisenhower who had to send troops into Little Rock, AK, to escort Black children to safely attend schools that were predominantly White.
No, the liberals would like to think that all we need is sufficient reason, fine speaking skills, and good intentions (not to mention the taxpayer money liberals love to spend at any and all problems, both real and imagined) and by the very dint of their sincerity, the world will be a better place almost overnight. No guns, tanks, or bombs, and we can all hold hands and sing John Lennon songs. (One wonders if John Lennon had been armed when he was attacked and defended himself if he might not be alive today.) The need for a military shatters the dream of the Left-that is, The United States military. They are more than ready to lavish praise upon grubby Communist revolutionaries such as Fidel Castro & Che Guevera, or Ortega's Sandinistas in Nicaragua or any puppets of the former Soviet Union.
The upcoming T.V. show Generation Kills is, from all previews, the worn out Hollywood stereotype of American G.I.'s as losers of limited intelligence who could not get a job in the civilian sector, of racists and sadists and misogynists who like to kill people of different color, creed, and customs. Imagine the outcry if we had a T.V. show depicting media moguls as insulated, privileged elitists out of touch with reality who tried to force a failed ideology upon the population with dishonest bias and historical revisionism. Or if a T.V. show portrayed the true "quagmire" of public education as misguided liberalism wherein an oligarchy of teacher unions collect billions of taxpayer money for personal perks while their students run amok and learn nothing but how to get to jail quickly.
In 2003 the NY City Council, dominated by over-paid and under-brained lefties like spoiled brat Gifford Miller, passed a statement that the term "evil" was "Biblical" and "outdated". This, after 9/11. (I suppose the terms "justice", "honesty", and "compassion" are likewise "Biblical" and "outdated". This same sitting council likewise praised blood-stained tyrant of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, as a great humanitarian who worked for civil rights; Mugabe shortly thereafter expressed his hope of one day becoming "the first African Adolph Hitler". Nice going, Mr. Miller.
This is the same reason liberals dislike and distrust a police force, and always have something bad to say about them. Now, again, they are very open and understanding to Communist police brutality, for what is Communism but the ultimate wet dream of liberalism, while it has been one of humanity's worst nightmares. In 1920 NY Times reporter Walter Duranty shamlessly defended Stalin's show trials and denied the "rumors" of famine, while The Great Cannibal starved between 8 to 10 million Ukrainians resistant to Communism into submission. Likewise while liberals make sure everyone has heard about Hitler, genocidal dictator Mao Zedong, who murdered at least 4 times as many Chinese as Hitler murdered Jews, gets a free pass as a "gifted political theorist", "poet", and "calligrapher".
Liberal contempt for our military is about as logical as not wanting to have smoke alarms because their prescence might invite a fire. It makes as much sense as not going to see the doctor because you are afraid of what he or she might tell you. "Ignore the bad people and they will go away" is hardly the intelligent position. "If you want peace, prepare for war" the Roman maxim runs (which was the basis of Ronald Reagan's Peace Thru Strength motto). It has never been more true than in an age of terrorism.
Another reason the liberals-who are overwhelmingly financially comfortable folk-dislike the military is because service in uniform represents self-sacrifice. Bill & Hilarious Clinton, the poster children for "yuppie greed", made it very clear during their time in The White House that they wanted no military uniformed personnel visible, both claimed pompously to "loathe" the military. Of course, spoiled brats are always embarrased by those who are generous and willing to think of others first.
The good news is that, in a pluralistic society with freedom of expression (such as this website) only a small fraction of people are influenced by the Dan Rathers of the media. The majority of Americans know how good our military people are, and have tuned out the naysayers. Abraham Lincoln said it best, and the left wing media is finding it to be painfully true: "You can fool some of the people some of the time, and some other people some other time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time."

Very well said!
